Muay Thai Visa Options

One of the first questions you might have before you come to Thailand is - Do I need a visa?

Last year, Thailand made it easier for Muay Thai students and digital nomads alike to go to Thailand with the new - Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). Alongside the traditional Muay Thai Visa (ED) you now have some great options. Let’s investigate!

Tourist Visa - Perfect for stays under 3 months!

For short stays in Thailand of under 3 months, students from 93 countries will qualify for a 2-month visa when they arrive in Thailand and this is the visa I would recommend for you to get.

Those countries are Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kosovo, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Panama, Papa New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, UK, USA, Uruguay, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

You do not need to apply for or pay for this visa, you will receive it when you arrive at the airport in Thailand, this visa can be extended for a further month at a Thai immigration office. This is the visa for you unless you plan on staying longer than 3 months or are making frequent visits to Thailand.

The requirements are:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining

  • Proof of sufficient funds 20k THB

  • Proof of onward travel (e.g. a return ticket out of Thailand)

The Muay Thai Education Visa (ED)

The Muay Thai Visa lets you stay in Thailand for up to one year. Usually, students will be in Thailand for a couple of months on a tourist visa to start the process, before leaving to apply for the visa from outside Thailand. Prior to the release of the DTV visa, this was the most popular visa for longer stays in Thailand. However, it is only recommended if you don’t have the available funds for the 5-year DTV visa.

The requirements are:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining

  • Enrollment in a year Muay Thai course with an approved school.

  • Police clearance in Thailand

If you don't have the available proof of funds for the DTV visa this is the best visa for you!

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

and Visa is a five-year visa that allows multiple entries into Thailand. Each time you arrive in Thailand, you will get a 6-month visa, which can be extended once for a further 6 months, giving you a whole year in Thailand.

The requirements are:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining

  • Proof of funds 400k THB (Approximately 9000 GBP, 11000 EUR or 11500 USD)

  • Letter from a qualifying Muay Thai School

  • Visa fee (20k THB paid to the Thai consulate when you apply)

The DTV visa is what I would recommend you get as long as you can provide the necessary proof of funds, if you do not have the funds and would like to stay in Thailand longer than 3 months I would recommend getting the Muay Thai Education Visa and if you are staying less than 3 months you’ll be best getting a tourist visa.
